Absences - Explanations & Instructions

School Phone Number: (602) 663-8606

An absence from school is an unexcused absence (UA) if it does not meet the criteria as an excused absence (EA).  An unexcused absence is also defined as a truancy.
If a student misses class without an excuse and does not subsequently turn in classwork, complete an assignment, take a test or fulfill any additional class assignments which they missed, the teacher may lower the student's grade for non-performance.  This may result in a failing grade.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:  Students who are 18 and older and live with a parent/guardian are still required to have a parent/guardian excuse their absences.

Excused Absences

Acceptable reasons/occurrences:
  • Illness
  • Medical/dental/health related, including appointment
  • School-sanctioned events
  • Related to the legal system
  • Family emergency
  • Bereavement and/or funeral
  • Religious observations
Re-admittance notes for Excused Absences (on the same day) must contain the following:
  • Student's name and grade level
  • Reason for the absence
  • The date of the absence and class periods missed for partial day
  • Parent/guardian name, daytime phone and signature
  • If applicable, documentation form the service provider or legal entity
Notes for full day absence for Excused Absences
  • Student's name and grade level
  • Reason for the absence
  • The date of the absence
  • Parent/guardian name, daytime phone and signature
  • If applicable, documentation form the service provider or legal entity

If no parent/guardian phone call is received on the day of the absence, the student has 48 hours upon return to school to provide a written note excusing the absence with the above criteria.  A student's absence will be considered excused only when it has been verified by a parent/guardian.  Falsely representing a parent/guardian in any way will result in disciplinary action.
