“The other day I gave a speech in front of my 160 classmates and all the professors,” said Tyler McCarthy, a student at Glenview College Prep High School.
PHOENIX – A junior attending Glenview College Prep High school is spending most of July at Princeton University this summer. During the school year in March 2014 Tyler McCarthy, a member of the GCP’s Junior States of America (JSA) chapter, applied for a pre-college summer program at the famed Princeton University in New Jersey. In April, Tyler was rewarded with an acceptance letter to attend his program of choice. The Learning and Leadership courses through the JSA Summer School program, allows students to explore the world of politics, international relations, or economics at one of the nation’s most prestigious ivy-league universities.
“I am learning so much here at Princeton University. I am taking an Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. Government and Politics course during July,” says Tyler. “After my class though, I have a congressional workshop for two hours where we have learned so far to professionally debate topics and correctly moderate a debate.”
Tyler is taking every opportunity to see, read and learn as much as possible about the history of our nation’s political system. “I have also read several different Federalist papers, which were written and published around the same time as the Constitution of the United States,” remarks Tyler in an email to the school leader of GCP, Giles Glithero.
“You can tell the excitement in Tyler’s correspondence. He is taking advantage of this extraordinary opportunity in so many ways,” says Glithero. “To be staying on such a magnificent campus is memorable, but to be attending classes and exploring some historical sites and monuments in New York and Philadelphia is an incredible and truly special opportunity he will never forget.”
Tyler will return to Arizona just in time for classes to begin again on August 4. He will likely have some great stories to tell about his experiences this summer. “I think the best part about the JSA Summer Program is that students can see this as an opportunity to reach for the stars – to become the best they can become. The students can honestly and genuinely see the possibilities of a bright future,” says Glithero. “This is just the beginning of the opportunities we hope to inspire our students to explore.”

What is the GCPHS Robotics Program going to look like? The VEX Robotics Design System offers students an exciting platform for learning about areas rich with career opportunities spanning science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). These are just a few of the many fields students can explore by creating with VEX Robotics technology. Beyond science and engineering principles, a VEX Robotics project encourages teamwork, leadership and problem solving among groups. It also allows educators to easily customize projects to meet the level of students’ abilities. The affordable VEX platform is expanding rapidly and is now found in middle schools, high schools and university labs around the globe. Robotics hobbyists also appreciate the advanced capabilities of the VEX System.

On October 17, some of Ms. Fieman's US History students demonstrated an early American assembly line by attempting to meet a quota of making six PB&Js in one minute.
The demonstration proved that where quantity was often the goal, it was quality that often suffered.
